Believe it or not, but the unthinkable has just happened earlier at Jerez: the first crash of a Formula 1 car in 2014 involves none other than Lewis Hamilton and his all-new Mercedes-AMG F1 W05 single-seater.
After having completed a little over eighteen laps of the Spanish circuit, the Brit apparently suffered a front wing failure on his car, lost control and planted it into the tire wall at Turn One of the Spanish track.
Since there were a lot of debris flying from the W05 right as Lewis had started braking, initial reports were mentioning a rear wing failure, but later on it was proven that the culprit parts were the two pieces connecting the front wing to the car's nose.
Thankfully, Hamilton emerged unscathed from the crash, but will prematurely end his testing session today, with his team mate Nico Rosberg to drive the new F1 W05 tomorrow.
“We can confirm a front wing failure on car 44. The reason is now being investigated. Lewis is fine, thank you all for asking!” said a Mercedes-AMG F1 spokesperson.
Before the crash, Lewis was leading the testing time sheets, but the oddest part is that the crash is almost like a deja-vu from 2013, when he also crashed the W04 during testing at Jerez. Is Hamilton battling a Jerez testing curse?
