Brawn Wins Racing Car of the Year Award

Ross Brawn and his Brackley organization might have taken a long time to secure an entry to the 2009 Formula One Championship, but once they did it, everyone was astonished at how the two BGP 001 cars smashed the competition in the first part of the season. Ross Brawn's designed car scored 6 wins in the first 7 races of 2009 and totaled 8 wins throughout the entire last year's campaign, giving the British team their first championship crown in history.

Although the Brawn GP cars were not as effective in the second part of the season, the team managed to win the constructors' title by a long shot, the only contender for the championship crown being Adrian Newey's RB5 (Red Bull). However, as compared to the BGP 001, the RB5 lacked the famous and controversial double-decker diffuser, a weapon that Brawn used to dominate the series until the British Grand Prix.

In accordance with the opinions of millions of fans worldwide, British magazine Autosport handed the award for the Best Racing Car of the Year to the BGP 001, during their AUTOSPORT Awards gala this weekend.

It was our intention to be successful during 2009, and that is what made us determined over the winter. It was a wonderful distraction - it quite easy in a way to focus on our job, because we never stopped to wonder what might happen if we didn't survive. We trusted in Ross (Brawn) and Nick (Fry) to save the team,” said design team member John Owen, according to autosport.com.

The car also helped 29-year old Jenson Button win his first championship crown of career, as the British driver secured the title one round to the finish line. Brawn GP's perfect season was however ruined in the last round, as Rubens Barrichello lost the chance to finish the season behind his teammate due to Sebastian Vettel's win during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Other Formula One figures that walked away with an AUTOSPORT distinction this weekend were Jenson Button (British/International Competition Driver of the Year), Ron Dennis (lifetime achievement in the sport), Adrian Newey (technical achievements in the sport) and Ferrari (contribution to motor racing).
