Brawn: Hamilton Will Be Stronger as Champion

Apart from focusing on developing the Honda RA109 for next season, Ross Brawn shared a few thoughts concerning the close battle between Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa last weekend and argued that, despite struggling to secure his maiden title in the dying corners of the Brazilian Grand Prix, the Brit will be a much tougher opponent in 2009.

“I cannot really judge, but Lewis looked tight this weekend - and that is understandable. That won't be there any more. If he gets close to his next championship, he will know what to do, he will know how it works out, and he will just be stronger next time around. So it does help,” insisted Brawn after the season finale at Interlagos.

Hamilton needed 5th place or better to win the title in Brazil, but fell into 6th place with two laps to go in the race. While unable to challenge Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel for 5th in the dying laps, he caught up with Toyota's Timo Glock a few corners to the finish line and secured a dramatic 5th place at the finish line. It was one of the most dramatic finales in the history of the sport (if not the most) and Brawn also agreed to it.

“It was the most exciting championship finale I can recall. So, to win it on the last couple of corners was sensational. It is great. A fantastic day for F1 and the championship was won in a fair and proper fashion with very little controversy this year, which is good for F1 as well.”

“We had a lot going on, we took a few punts on tyre choice which did not work out, but from our position in the race we did not have a lot to lose. But we did get drawn into it in the last couple of laps, especially when Vettel got past Hamilton and realized the consequences of that, then you could see Glock was in trouble. But both Felipe and Lewis are fantastic drivers to be honest. They have done the sport a credit, both of them, with their approach and their attitude. It is a shame that one of them had to lose as both did a great job,” concluded the Honda boss.

Hamilton not only became the first black driver to be crowned world champion in the history of Formula 1 racing, but also the youngest. Also, he clinched the first F1 title for McLaren in the last 9 years and became the first British driver to win the championship in 12 years (since Damon Hill in 1996, while driving for Williams-Renault).
