A four-wheeled legend. That’s the only way to describe the Mk2 Escort, which differs from the first generation through a squarer exterior design and a revised underbody. Produced from December 1974 until 1980, the Mk2 Escort won the RAC Rally every single year from 1975 to 1979.
Even though it’s been four decades since its demise, the second-gen has been resurrected as a continuation model by MST Cars in North Wales. Every single bolt is brand-spanking new, along with the hand-built body shell and chassis. The drool-worthy Escort is available in four variations, ranging from road-going tourer to the Ultimate Rally Car.
In Group 4 specification, highlights include Bilstein coilover dampers all around, an adjustable live axle out back, AP Racing alloy calipers and ventilated rotors, and billet throttle bodies. Other goodies that are worth mentioning are the in-trunk fuel cell, Life Racing ECU with preset maps, traction control, and launch control.
Priced from 65,000 pounds sterling excluding VAT in road-going guise or 95,000 for the Ultimate Rally Car, this fellow isn’t exactly cheap. Those figures translate to $88,080 and $128,820 at current exchange rates, and we haven’t even talked about options. “Your Escort Mk2 is unique to you and can be painted in any color you choose,” and “there are no limits” to the build.
2.5 liters and 200-plus horsepower come standard from a Duratec motor, but customers can opt for plenty of spicy alternatives. The 2.0-liter BDG rally engine is joined by a 2.5-liter Millington Diamond that promises 330-plus horsepower, along with XE, Honda, and Cosworth plants. In addition to five- and six-speed manuals, MST Cars is capable of upgrading the gravel-loving coupe with a sequential transmission or a historic ZF gearbox.
Additional extras include 13- and 15-inch alloy wheels from Minilite or Revolution, all types of tires, larger brakes, Reiger ¾-way adjustable dampers, and a motorsport-inspired digital instrument cluster. These being said, where would like to drive the MST Cars Mk2 Escort like a man on a mission?
