Bosch Start/Stop Systems for Auto Trannys

One of the most acclaimed innovations of the past few years, the start/stop technology, is quickly adopted by manufacturers given its obvious advantages. Up until now, however, most such systems have been developed for manual-transmission vehicles.

Bosch plans to change all that and announced this week it has developed a way for start/stop to be fitted on automatic transmission vehicles as well and work just as effectively.

According to Bosch, using the system in an auto vehicle is easier than in manual transmission cars. The only pedal to be pressed for the system to engage is the brake. As soon as the car has come to a halt, the engine stops automatically and starts again when the brake pedal is released.

This simple use however posed problems in developing the system for auto trannys, as the time required for the system to restart the car is shortened. Bosch says it has tweaked the electric motor, the starter, the pinion-engaging mechanism and the injection system to solve this problem. The control software was changed as well.

The software for the new start/stop was developed with Bosch together with several car manufacturers, so that it can be fitted into the Volkswagen Passat and Porsche Panamera (dual-clutch transmission), Fiat 500 (automated manual transmission) and Audi A8 (torque converter clutch).

The studies conducted by the supplier have shown that by using a start/stop system, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions levels in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) can be reduced by up to 5 percent, while in the NEDC urban segment the reduction is of about 8 percent.
