Last time we heard about Bosch, they were looking to build better battery packs for EVs as well as a mild plug-in powertrain, but their vision for the future is also focused on self-driving cars.
After working with Mercedes-Benz on an automated valet parking plan, Bosch goes deeper into researching the unexplored field of autonomous driving.

They teamed up with TomTom and are currently using TomTom maps in their automated test vehicles. As you'd expect, the tasks have been split between the two brands, which means TomTom is designing the necessary maps, while Bosch, on the basis of its systems engineering work, is defining the specifications these maps have to meet.

Testing is already underway on some public roads in Germany as well as in the United States.

Furthermore, Bosch officials think “only with high precision maps will automated driving on freeways be possible from 2020,” and we're backing that up, because there's not the smallest room for error when it comes to self-driving cars.

But these maps are not like the ones the come with a standard navigation system or a GPS you bought from Walmart.

First of all, accuracy is significantly higher – down to decimeter precision and second, the map material for highly automated driving consists of multiple layers, since, for example, up-to-the-minute speed-limit information has to be available instantly.

It also needs to be accurate; that's why the TomTom mapping fleet will continue to be regularly on the road on the lookout for new routes.
