BorgWarner to Supply FTP with Engine Timing Systems

Fiat's recently introduced two cylinder TwinAir engine will benefit from engine timing systems supplied by BorgWarner. The supplier will be shipping part to Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) for all three power versions of the engine, namely 65-horsepower naturally aspirated, 85 and 105 horsepower.

"BorgWarner's engine timing system delivers a combination of low weight, low friction and low noise in a compact package, making it ideally suited for FPT's groundbreaking engine technology,"
James Verrier, BorgWarner Morse TEC general manager said in a release.

Fiat introduced Europe's only two cylinder engine on a special version of the 500 model earlier this month. The 0.9l turbocharged gasoline unit has been tweaked into propelling the small 500 from a standstill to 62 mph in 11 seconds. Fitted on the 500, it eats up to 4.1l/100 km (57.4 mpg), while emitting 95g/km of CO2.

Fiat will manufacture the TwinAir engine in Brazil, at the Parana facility, together with the 1.6l and 1.8l E.torQ engines, as well as with the double dry clutch automated gearboxes. 40 percent of the Brazilian output will be exported. The new engine will not be only an attribute of the 500, as it is expected to debut on other Fiat models as well.

In the statement regarding the engine timing systems from BorgWarner, news of a possible hybrid application with start/stop technologies has appeared. Fiat might go even as far as to fit the TwinAir with a twin-clutch transmission plus a 5 kW electric motor. The hybridized 500 will be capable of emitting under 70 grams per kilometer of CO2 reaching in excess of 100 mpg (2.3l/100 km).
