BorgWarner Opens Technical Center in Shanghai

The Michigan-based manufacturer of highly engineered components and systems for vehicle powertrain applications worldwide inaugurated recently a new technical center in Shanghai, China. The facility was officially opened on March 22 in Zizhu Science Park and by 2012 is expected to employ around 400 people.

BorgWarner expects the Shanghai Technical Center to become its largest facility from the company’s network of global technical centers. The center in question will provide additional local support for BorgWarner's powertrain technology, which delivers improved fuel economy, emissions and vehicle performance. BorgWarner products include turbochargers, DualTronic modules, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves, air pumps, timing chains, fans and fan drives, water pumps, ignition systems, transmission solenoids and controls, friction plates, and all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive systems.

"BorgWarner has experienced tremendous growth in China," said Tim Manganello, BorgWarner Chairman and CEO. "We select our facility locations carefully and strategically to serve our important customers in the regions where they are located. Opening the BorgWarner China Technical Center represents another great milestone in our global success and reflects our participation in the growth of the Chinese economy."

BorgWarner entered the Chinese market in 1993 with a joint venture business. In China, the American company from Auburn Hills, Michigan also has operations running in Beijing, Ningbo and Dalian in addition to Shanghai. The company operates manufacturing and technical facilities in 59 locations in 18 countries and counts among its customers VW/Audi, Ford, Toyota, Renault/Nissan, General Motors, Hyundai/Kia, Daimler, Chrysler, Fiat, BMW, Honda, John Deere, PSA, and MAN.
