BorgWarner Engineering for 2010 Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan

Supplier BorgWarner announced today it will supply several engine and drivetrain parts for the 2010 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan. The parts in question are cam torque actuated variable cam timing (CTA VCT) for Ford's 3.0l V6 Duratec engine, chain timing systems for the 2.5l and 3.0l engines, as well as HY-VO chain, friction plates and transmission solenoid.

"At BorgWarner, we are driven to create innovative powertrain technologies that boost fuel economy as well as performance. In the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, drivers can enjoy both," Tim Manganello, BorgWarner CEO said in a release announcing the contract. "Our collaboration with Ford earned two 2009 Automotive News PACE awards. We look forward to continuing our strong partnership in the future."

The center piece of BorgWarner's technologies is the CTA VCT, whose cam phasers work faster and under a bigger range of engine speeds, to provide better fuel consumption, less CO2 emissions and more horsepower.

According to BorgWarner, the technologies to be implemented in the Milan and Fusion allow the 2.5l engine to consume some 8 percent less fuel compared with 2009 models. For the 3.0l V6, the CTA technology allow for no less than 20 percent increase in horsepower, while achieving the same fuel consumption levels.

For the 6F35 6-speed automatic transmission, BorgWarner's engineering provides lower oil flow, thus less energy is required to drive the oil pump. The friction plates and HY-VO transmission plates make for greater gears transfer, adding to the fuel saving capabilities of the transmission.
