After the band’s initial statement written on U2’s official website on Sunday sounded more like a minor accident, it turns out the lead singer’s motorcycle crash was quite serious. New York’s Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center has revealed  that Bono broke his arm in six places and fractured his eye socket, hand and shoulder blade.
The famous artist was riding his bike through New York’s Central Park on Sunday, when he attempted to avoid another rider and crashed. Doctors called it a “high energy bicycle accident”, so we’re assuming he was riding quite fast.

The arm fracture itself involved a five-hour operation on Sunday, after the accident happened. U2’s lead singer needed three metal plates and 18 screws in the medical intervention, as doctors took him straight to the operating room. According to the hospital’s statement made on Wednesday night, the following day (Monday) Bono went through another surgery on his left hand.

U2: We're one man down

Meantime, the band revealed on its website that: “It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we’re one man down. Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it. We’re sure he’ll make a full recovery soon, so we’ll be back!”

U2 was scheduled for a weeklong residency on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon the moment the accident happened so they had to cancel. The band added: “much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding.” This was probably the moment when fans realized the accident was quite serious.

According to Dean Lerich, MD Orthopaedic trauma surgeon at the hospital where Bono was treated, the singer will require intensive and progressive therapy, but that a full recovery is expected.
