While it may look like a first-generation, original Jeep Cherokee SJ from afar, this 1975 SUV is putting the words “sports utility vehicle” into a completely distinct perspective. One that involves things such as a one-piece lift-off fiberglass front end to cover the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that was snatched together with its six-speed manual transmission from a 2010 Challenger, among others...
And that crazy stick shift V8 setup (the car, when it was purchased, was originally sporting an automatic transmission) is not even half of the story going on underneath the hood – because the owner and his team are now running a compound turbo setup in there. That’s a small S366 underneath a bigger S480... for our information!
Apparently (though we should take this with a grain of salt as there’s no dyno evidence after the S480 was added) the 1975 Cherokee is now capable of developing around 880 hp to the wheel – while still being a daily driver.
Why a daily driver – because the team has a habit of going to either drag racing or autocross events. Such as the one they entered at the Holley Moparty in Bowling Green, for which they drove around 500 miles! Quite the cruiser, indeed.
According to the owner, this was the ultimate goal of the project – something to race at drag and autocross events (not burnouts, they don’t have so many spare tires!) while also keeping some creature comforts.
Basically, the build is “a Jeep costume on a racecar... that we daily drive,” complete with neat details such as the roll cage in the cargo area being able to hold the spare tires while in transit, the cut-off switch being an old wrench, or the switch panel constructed out of a burn-out piston!
By the way, the wagon-like body serves its intended purpose - as the team stacks the cargo area with all the spare parts they need... just to make sure they can get back home at the end of the day.
