It’s been a crazy year for car collectors all over the world, as a lot of high-profile, unique and exciting cars went under the hammer in the past months. 2018 was equally a crazy year for auctioneers as well, who saw records being broken at an alarming rate.
Bonhams, for instance, one of the biggest auction houses on the planet, broke record after record in more than one department in the year that is about to end.

The British house held 18 motor car sales and five motorcycle sales in 2018, spread throughout six countries. Although it doesn’t say exactly how much it sold, Bonhams said the financial results are worthy of world records.

For instance, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale the 1961 Aston Martin MP209 DB4GT Zagato managed to become the most valuable British car ever sold at a European auction, fetching £10,081,500  ($12.7 million).

The most valuable motorcycle ever sold at auction became the 1951 Vincent 998cc Black Lightning, which sold for $929,000 at the Las Vegas Sale in January.

Bonhams was also responsible for selling the largest-ever collection of Ford vehicles, the Den Hartogh Collection. Comprising more than 200 Ford and Lincoln cars and commercial vehicles, as well as more than 50 motorcycles, the collection was sold entirely in June for over $7 million.

The house also sold machines owned or used by celebrities, including Count Albrecht Graf von Goertz, the Maharajah of Jammu and Kashmir, Steve McQueen and Ayrton Senna.

"Every area of the Motoring Group - by geography and category - has shown growth, whether it be by volume, success, auction records and, indeed, new sales which have been added to complement our existing sales calendar," said in a statement James Knight, Motoring Chairman at Bonhams.
