BMW’s X5 xDrive25d Is Not as Slow as You Might Think

We still remember the reaction the world had when BMW announced that the new X5 will be available with a 2-liter diesel engine, but deep down we knew that there were some reasonable studies behind this decision. After all, the Munich-based manufacturer wouldn’t have otherwise released such a model.
The numbers on paper looked really good too. According to BMW’s measurements, the xDrive25d model would be capable of an average fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100 km (39.9 mpg) while releasing just 157 grams of CO2 per each kilometer covered.

At the same time, the dynamics looked good, the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint being claimed at 8.2 seconds thanks to all-wheel drive and an automatic 8-speed gearbox. Sure, it’s no rocket, but it’s more than decent for a car weighing 2 tons.

Not to believe their stats without checking, the world started doing their own measuring and while the fuel consumption figures weren’t exactly the same (what’d you expect?) the acceleration times were rather close.

Of course, for the best results launch control would be necessary but even without it, you could still do that benchmark speed in 8.3 seconds which is just 0.1 seconds behind the official time. That’s impressive, especially considering the car’s weight.

Furthermore, the 2-liter diesel mill can be taken up to around 250 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque easily with any random ECU tune. That being said, unless you really want a 6-cylinder inline engine this might be the best proposition for you and your family.
