It won’t be long now until more established bike makers follow the lead of Harley-Davidson and come up with their own electric two-wheelers. Many are working already on such projects, some in utter secrecy, others less so.
BMW is among those planning to go electric in the not so distant future. Although is yet to present the first fully electric production bike, the Bavarian company already showed its intention of going electric with the presentation of the naked Vision DC Roadster back in June 2019.
Now, thanks to a piece of info coming our way via Electrek, we get our first glimpse at what may be an electric BMW Motorrad bike, albeit just in the form of a patent drawing. It’s unclear when or to whom the patent was filed with, but it does show the direction BMW plans to take in this respect.
More to the point, we’re talking about what appears to be a frameless motorcycle, inspired or possibly even based on the design of the C Evolution Scooter that has been in series production since 2014.
The bulk of the bike, or the place where the engine should have been, is made of a box containing the electric drive components. To it BMW linked directly the two wheel assemblies.
For now, there is no word as to what will power the motorcycle or what its performances would be.
As for the Vision DC Roadster, the concept previewed a major shift from the nearly century-old boxer engine that will have to be made sometime in the near future. Visually stunning, the bike is powered by an undisclosed electric powertrain also located where the engine usually sat. The motor that spins the wheels, shaped like a cylinder, is fitted underneath the battery.
The Vision was designed with a tubular structure made of light materials like carbon fiber and aluminum.
