Now, they worked together with Mercury Marine for a second time to design their new 75, 90 and 115 HP FourStroke engines. Being used on a variety of boats, these new plants have a couple of specifics they need to fulfill.

First of all, they have to be quiet, the success of their owners depending on it. Second, they have to be lightweight and have plenty of power and thrust as well as unbeatable fuel economy. Last, but not least, they have to be reliable.

“DesignworksUSA created a design language for the Mercury FourStroke engine that was modern and dynamic in line with the Mercury family aesthetic. We leveraged our four decades of experience in transportation design to create a design solution relevant to this powerful and efficient product,” said Laurenz Schaffer, President, BMW Group DesignworksUSA.

According to Mercury, these are the best choice available in their line-up right now for bass, deep-vee, runabout and offshore boats as well as pontoons and saltwater skiffs.

Into creating these engines, the guys from DesignworksUSA knew they had to incorporate modern surface treatments and proportions as well as the familiar look of Mercury’s products. To make sure they are as quiet as possible, a tightly sealed top cowl and idle relief muffler system were used to lessen high-frequency exhaust noise.

Furthermore, a top-mounted throttle body fine-tunes intake noise while their trademark Focused Mount System (FMS) reduces vibration. A new clutch system reduces shock while shifting into gear and the trim pump is designed to run significantly quieter.

As for weight saving features, you should know that the new units are 20 pounds lighter than any of their direct competitors, while also having a lower profile. The engine is a 2.1-liter 4-cylinder, 8-valve unit with a single-overhead-cam for better performance, efficiency and reliability.
