BMW’s Chinese Factory Celebrates One Million Cars Assembled

It was 2003 when BMW first started production in Shenyang, China, recognizing the growing importance of the country in the global scale of things. Today, the Asian country is the biggest car market in the world not only in the grand total scheme of things but also for BMW in particular, overtaking the long-standing USA.

Today, the production site reached an impressive milestone: the one-millionth vehicle produced in China rolled off the production line. Coincidence or not, the car in question is the most popular model in BMW’s range today, a 3 Series, but in long wheelbase guise. No, don’t open up BMW’s configurator if you don’t live in China as that model is exclusive to the Asian market alone.

“For more than ten years now, our joint venture has been very successful at producing BMW models in China. The production site in Shenyang with its two vehicle plants Tiexi and Dadong as well as the adjacent engine plant is thus a vital element of our global production network,” said Harald Krüger, member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production.

“We are striving for further balanced and profitable growth in the three world regions, Europe, America and Asia. This is why in China as well as in other countries, we focus on the principle of ‘production follows the market’,” he added.

As is the case with all car manufacturers around the world that want to build cars in the communist country, BMW also had to join forces with a local company due to the government’s requirements. Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Limited has been that partner for the Bavarians since 2003.

Production actually started at the Shenyang plant in 2004 and today, the site is comprised by the Dadong plant (where the 5 Series is built) and the Tiexi plant (where the X1, 3 Series and Zinoro cars are made). Coincidentally, this is where the anniversary car was built today.

The two locations have a capacity of 300,000 units per year at the moment but plans are to expand it by another 100,000 over the next two years. In total, over 2 billion euros were invested by BMW over there over the last five years, 14,000 jobs being created at the same time.
