The automotive awards season is in full swing, some might say. As we’re getting closer to December 31st, more and more publications are hurrying up to hand out awards on different categories like “Best Car” or “Best Truck” or whatever they want.
The guys from Ward’s Auto compiled a list of the 10 best engines of the year and, of course, BMW couldn’t miss out on it, winning the award for its 3-liter inline 6-cylinder diesel engine codenamed N57D30o1.

This unit was initially using 2 turbochargers to put out 245 HP and 540 Nm (400 lb-ft) of torque but, for 2013 it received an update and is now using only one turbo with twin-scroll technology that makes 258 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque and is even more fuel efficient (one of the reasons it won the award in the first place).

Hooked up to the brilliant 8-speed automatic gearbox, this engine can return up to over 35 mpg (6.7 l/100 km) on the 535d model so it’s well worth the recognition.
