BMW’s 2016 7 Series Is the World’s First Production Car to Use Diamond Tweeters

The 2016 BMW 7 Series world debut didn’t mark a premiere for the Germans alone at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year but also an industry-wide one. You see, according to Bowers & Wilkins, the flagship from Munich is the world’s first production car to feature a sound system that uses diamond tweeters.

The British manufacturer claims that the sound system was specially designed for the 7 Series and uses acoustic technologies that have never been seen in a commercial car before. That includes their diamond dome tweeters.

They go even further, claiming that the gem is an ideal material for tweeters, contrary to what others might say about silk and other combinations. That’s because it offers a perfect combination of lightness and rigidity to deliver crystal clear highs.

To make all of this happen, engineers from both BMW and Bowers & Wilkins worked together to make sure that everything is just right. They had to make the sound system fit both the interior of the car and the high demands customers had from it. The primary goal, however, was to make the passengers feel like they were in the studio with the artist as the song was made.

Of course, when we had our first contact with the 7 Series, we put the system to the test as the audiophiles that we are and we have to agree that it is above anything else we’ve heard in a car before. Bowers & Wilkins also provided the sound system inside the T6 Volvo XC90 we tested recently and we fell in love with it once again back then.

Everything is just right and we’re not referring to the sound alone either but to the way speakers look like as well. The grilles are made of stainless steel and they feature a pattern that mimics the Fibonacci sequence, a trademark that makes all the difference in the world, no matter how silly it may sound.

The 16 speaker system is made up of three diamond dome tweeters, four aluminum tweeters, seven Kevlar midrange drivers, two Rohacell subwoofers and a 10-channel 1400 watt class D amplifier with a QuantumLogic, sound processor. That should be enough for any taste.
