Today, BMW’s line-up at the Geneva Motor Show was comprised of three world premieres. Apart from the 2 Series Gran Tourer and the new M4 Safety Car with water injection cooling, the Germans also brought forward the facelifted 1 Series.
As far as facelifts go, this is a proper one, bringing the hatchback where it should’ve been in the first place. We won’t beat it around the bush claiming that the design of the original was any good and we will admit that the new one looks a lot better.

The entire front fascia was redone as well as the back end. Actually, including the technical upgrades we could actually say that this is a completely new model. Alas, we know that the underpinnings are the same...

The F20/F21 platform is still used and the handling should be roughly the same, excluding the new engines that will probably have a different feel to them.

Speaking of which, the new 1 Series LCI gets almost the entire range of B-family of engines from 1.5-liter 3-cylinder mills to the 2-liter 4-cylinder ones, all of them aiming at pushing CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and production costs down.

As a matter of fact, the most eco-friendly BMW car at the moment, is the new 116d EfficientDynamics version that uses a 3-cylinder diesel plant that returns a fuel consumption of 3.4 l/100 km (69 mpg) with only 89 grams of CO2 per km. Of course, that excludes the i cars.

Say what you will about the 1er but the truth of the matter is that for at least 3 more years this will be the only car in its segment with rear-wheel drive and a 50:50 weight distribution. This is what sheer driving pleasure is all about.

As far as standard features go, the cars will now come with a SIM card pre-installed for internet access, the iDrive system and a new display, Active Cruise Control plus a touch-sensitive controller. Optional features include new LED Adaptive headlights and an enhanced Parking Assistant system.
