BMW has not let slip a single detail about the Z4 replacement, affectionately called the Z5 by some people. We don't even know what it's going to be named.
The collaboration between the German automaker and Toyota may result in a much closer partnership than you might expect. According to the latest rumor, the Z car will be built on the same line as the new Supra. Which one? Not known, but there will be a lot more differences between them than there are between the Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86.
BMW Blog reports that two separate chassis codes have been registered, G29 for the Bimmer and J29 for its Japanese counterpart. While the Z5 will only be available as a roadster with a folding fabric roof, the Supra will be coupe-only.
Some details have also emerged regarding the engines that will be available. Unlike the current Z4 model or the Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class, this new roadster will only have two versions.
The same source talks about the sDrive30i model being powered by the same new B48 2-liter turbo mill as the 330i. Considering the car will be lighter, it should be enough, but an sDrive40i model will also be available with a lot more power. Not quite the M2 engine, it still packs plenty of punch and all the things we love about BMW.
In this case, we will be dealing with the same engine fitted to the 340i and M240i. Don't expect any M models, though an M Performance one is always an option. At this moment, it's not clear what kind of engine Toyota will use. They make plenty of V6 units, but maybe they won't fit as well under the hood of the car.
It wouldn't be completely unfathomable for the Supra to have a BMW turbo mill, but we will have to wait longer for the confirmation.
