A long time ago, rumors about a possible small, FWD roadster came out, saying that BMW wants to use its new UKL platform to the max and launch as many variations on it as possible. While deemed as less than likely by most people, various publications claimed that this was serious news.

The one at the forefront was Car magazine. They were actually the ones that ran the story for the first time, back in February 2011. Now, the same people are coming out, saying that they might’ve been wrong, saying that the new leadership in Munich decided to ax the project.

According to them, Harald Kruger, the new CEO and Klaus Frolich, the chief of Research and Development, are scrutinizing the projects currently in development and dropping anything that isn’t essential. And guess what? An FWD small roadster didn’t make the cut. What a surprise, right?   Considering the fact that this would’ve gone up against the brilliant MX-5 that is rear-wheel drive, the chances of it being successful were slim, at most.

The Z2 would’ve also been the same car underneath as the ‘rumored to be coming out soon’ MINI Superleggera Roadster, a car that looks incredible to begin with. A small MINI Roadster with FWD is a completely normal thing and if BMW decides to actually make it, the sales will prove that they were right in releasing it. A Z2, wouldn’t even scrape the surface of what would be considered a success, on the other hand.

Our take? If the Z2 was ever considered, we’re glad it was dropped. Bring out a proper replacement for the Z4 and stop wasting resources on other, crazy niche cars!
