BMW Z2, Engine Details and Projected Prices

As we reported several times over the past few weeks, BMW is working on the new BMW Z2, the flagship of the company's infamous Project i.

The news about the Z2 is slowly going past the rumor stage, as the German manufacturer plans to launch both a roadster and a coupe versions in 2013, autobild.de reported.

The Z2 is under development in BMW's motorsports division, working together with Ulrich Kranz's Project i team. The defining word for the Z2 is light weight, as its manufacturer plans to keep the vehicle at around the 1,000 kg threshold.

Three powertrain version will be available for the Z2: an electric motor with lithium ion batteries, a hybrid drive with Range Extender and a 1.6l 4 cylinder turbocharged engine. The latter, a gasoline powerplant with direct injection, will develop 204 horsepower.

Being developed under the EfficientDynamics badge, the Z2 is planned fuel consumption is said to stand at under five liters every one hundred kilometers and a CO2 emissions rate of less than 90g/km.

Prices forecasted for the Z2 can be considered common sense. The base Z2 is said to start at around 30,000 euros, but things get tricky when it comes to the electric version. This battery pack for this electric Z2 alone is said to to be priced at a minimum of 20,000 euros. In plain terms, the electric Z2 will cost around 50,000 euros.

The BMW Z2, code named Vision concept, will be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, set to open its doors in September. Since no official photo has been yet leaked, the only thing left to go on is Huckfeldt's rendering of the Z2. According to bmwblog.com, BMW sources said the rendering is "the real deal".
