BMW Z Spyder Stradale, a New Face for EfficientDynamics

Dubbed by Norbert Reithofer, chairman of the board for BMW, as the tangible form of the EfficientDynamics concept, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics was introduced at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show last September. Now, some eight months later, insiders point to BMW pondering giving the car a new name and a new shape: BMW Z Spyder Stradale. .

According to BMWblog, citing BMW insider Scott27, the model is the direct result of BMW's financial recovery and will turn into a means for the German carmaker to tap into the green premium segment.

The car will have a " low driving position, set back towards the rear axle with a heavily raked screen and long hood and short rear overhang," the source says. It will be built with an aluminum structure, with the front of the car made of a mix of steel, aluminum and magnesium. Carbon fiber, the new favorite material for BMW, will also be used, and quite extensively.

Being an EfficientDynamics model, the Spyder Stradale will use Stop-Start technology, Brake energy regeneration and so on, as well as, surprise, a soon-to-be-revealed new set of technologies called Active Aerodynamics.

Engine wise, the supercar is said to be fitted with mild or full hybrid technologies, boasting electric motors placed alongside the transmission. A hydrogen fuel cell version is also possible.  For hardcore combustion engine lovers, BMW will offer a high performance V8 and even a V10 currently developed for the next M5, paired with either a conventional automatic transmission or a future 9 speed double clutch transmission.

The Z Spyder Stradale is an older idea of Reithofer, dating way back to 2005, when he took charge of the company's destiny. In fact, the chairman is so excited with how the Vision turned out, that it calls it "Sheer Driving Pleasure 2.0."

This is not the first rumor surfacing around BMW's Vision. Days before the public unveiling at Frankfurt last year, news of a BMW Z10 supercar, in the guise of both a coupe and a roadster version hit the web.

In February this year, news of BMW giving the green light for the series production of the Vision surfaced. According to sources, the Vision has been approved for production and will see the roads in 2013.

Adding all the numbers, the result is clear: the Vision will be produced, including in a BMW California Spyder Project-inspired Z.
