The largest vehicle BMW has ever made for the mass market is based on the X5 platform and will roll off the same assembly line in North Carolina. Its aim? To finally compete with the Escalade, the Mercedes GLC and the Range Rover.

Being stuffed with seats is only part of what this model is all about. Having all the latest toys and offering a competitive amount of luxury is also important. These latest spyshots are so good they should be illegal. They show details like the all-digital speedometer, the larger iDrive system and even the optional pillows on the headrests.

Of course, there are a few glitches in the matrix too, such as the fact that the infotainment showing a picture of a
5 Series instead of the X7. At least the fat BMW is aspirational.

Wood trim on the dash somehow seems adequate in combination with white and blue leather. The color combo is slightly nautical, reminiscent of Bentley.

Some of the engines for the X7 have already been revealed. At launch, there's going to be a 4.4-liter V8, which should be available with or without the M Performance look. Also, BMW will offer a 3-liter diesel and a 3-liter gasoline unit. Everything will be hooked up to an 8-speed gearbox and xDrive.

This bad boy isn't built for handling. We're told that it tips the scales at 2.3 tons, but the air suspension does a good job of keeping everything in place. This can change the ride height by up to 80mm. And in order to compete with the Audi Q8, BMW will also introduce a rear-wheel steering system on the X7.
