Initially, the 2015 BMW F16 X6 was launched with only a couple of engine choices that depended mostly on where you live. In the US, for example, you could (and still can) order an xDrive35i, sDrive35i and xDrive50i model, according to your needs. And yes, the sDrive35i is rear-wheel drive.
Europeans didn’t have those petrol choices up until today. The xDrive35i is now available in Europe too but not in RWD configuration. That means it’s coming out with a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbocharged plant making 306 HP and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque, a little low for a 2.3 ton car.
So far, that was off the table. You could, however, get two different diesels that are not available in the States: the xDrive30d and M50d M Performance Automobile. Both of the use 3-liter inline 6-cylinder plants but the MPA is the current world record holder for most powerful diesel of this size thanks to three turbos.
Starting today, you can order another diesel in Europe: the xDrive40d. This is also a 3-liter inline-6 diesel but only has two turbochargers that help it make 313 HP and 630 Nm (465 lb-ft) of torque. That’s just right for a car like the X6 if you don’t want to pay extra for the M Performance bits. The difference is around €30,000 so we’d say it’s worth it.
Both new engines are EU6 compliant and they both use all-wheel drive (no RWD for Europeans right now). Fuel consumption is also impressive for the new models. The xDrive35i petrol is supposed to take up 8.5 l/100 km (27.6 mpg) combined, while the diesel xDrive40d is rated at 6.2 l/100 km (37.9 mpg). As we said, the latter option will probably be the best-selling model in the range starting today.
