What you get for that money is a new class of M products, both using the same engine, a 4.4l unit, twin-scroll twin-turbocharged reverse flow V8 that develops 555 horsepower and 680 Nm of torque. Benefiting from technologies like the Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM), the engine uses a single exhaust manifold with tuned runners on top of the engine.
This makes the engine offer a broad torque curve and, mated to a six-speed sports automatic gearbox with Steptronic, makes the big Ms reach 60 mph (100 km/hour) in 4.7 seconds. The top speed of the X5 M and X6 M is 250 km/hour (155 mph).
The vehicles are rated as having a combined fuel consumption rate of 13.9l/100 km (17 mpg) - urban 19.3 l/100 km (12 mpg) and highway 10.8 l/100 km (22 mpg). The two are not the best examples of environmentally-friendly vehicles, as CO2 emissions are rated at 325 g/km.
Dynamic Performance Control, Adaptive Drive, Servotronic power steering and Active Roll Stabilization system, Heads Up Display, Rear View Camera and High Beam Assistant are all technologies used in the X5M and X6M as standard.
BMW hopes that the two new Ms will be a great addition to their high performance range and will successfully take on AMG and Porsche SUVs. Both of them will become available in the US this fall. So far, order guides are not yet available, but they are expected to be released in the next few weeks.
