BMW X5 xDrive40e Getting Ready for Its Shanghai Debut

BMW took the virtual veils off of its first plug-in hybrid model outside the i sub-brand just a few weeks ago. We finally found out what’s powering the beast and what it’s good for. Now, the car is getting ready for its debut in front of a live audience and the set the Germans chose for this unveiling is the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show.

On the outside, the X5 xDrive40e looks exactly like the concept that was presented at Paris and for Shanghai even the wrap will be kept on, featuring the trademark ‘e’ logo for electric or hybrid vehicles per BMW’s new strategy. All future cars that are not relying solely on fuel fossils for propulsion will be featuring this ‘e’ in one way or another.

The xDrive40e model might be overdoing it a little, being covered up almost entirely in a livery that has that motif but since this is the first of its kind, we’ll let it slide for now.

On the tech side of things, the new plug-in hybrid uses a new-gen 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making 245 HP and an electric one fitted inside the gearbox that is good for 113 HP alone. Unfortunately, they can’t deliver their maximum outputs at the same time so, overall, the X5 can benefit of 313 HP and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque at the very most.

That is more than enough though, as the car was developed for an eco-friendly approach and not to tackle the Nurburgring or anything like that. The 0-62 mph sprint (0-100 km/h) takes 6.8 seconds and the car is good for a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h). At the same time, it can go all electric.

In this mode, the CO2 emissions will, of course, be zero. Furthermore, you’ll be doing up to 19 miles (31 km) on electric power alone and be able to accelerate to a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h).

The fuel efficiency should be outstanding as well, rated at 3.3 - 3.4 l/100 km (83-85 mpg imp) with emissions well under 100 grams per km (77-78 on average). However, until we get to drive this plug-in hybrid X5 we still have to see it in the metal at Shanghai where we will be reporting live from, so stay tuned.
