About a week ago, the world was both awed and horrified by the unveiling of the Tesla Cybertruck, but there were also some that laughed their heads off as one of the advertised features of the truck failed miserably. On stage, in front of a crowd of journalists, and online, in front of millions, Cybertruck’s unbreakable windows broke as they were hit with a big metal ball.
Elon Musk was taken by surprise by the mishap, but later rebounded and explained the windows failed because of a previous sledgehammer hit applied to the door that supported them. For the record, the said sledgehammer blow was applied only to the front door, which could explain the mishap with the front window, but the rear one smashed as well, out of solidarity, probably.
Regardless of the reason, the incident caused a flood of jokes, including more official ones that escaped nearly unnoticed in the days that followed.
At the beginning of November, BMW introduced the world to Daniel Huber, the only one of its engineers allowed to shoot live ammo at Bimmers. A video released on November 5 (available below) shows the man firing iron-core, 7.62 x 39 mm caliber ammunition right at the windscreen of a specially-designed, armored BMW X5.
That’s because yes, BMW is making armored cars, and the Germans saw the perfect opportunity to laugh a bit at Tesla’s expense.
In a tweet dated November 22, that is one day after the Tesla pickup was shown, BMW said its new X5 Protection VR6 comes with bulletproof windows, but also offers “splinter protection in case it gets hit by a metal ball.”
For years, BMW has been known as the trickster of the industry, quick to respond to any development and challenge, so this reply does not come as a surprise. So far, Tesla or Elon Musk did not gratify the Germans with any reply, being busy picking on Ford and all.
