The concept of an armored car isn’t new, but the X5 Protection VR6 is based on the all-new G05. Developed for “private individuals and persons at risk,” the ultra-safe sports activity vehicle starts life out as the M50i with xDrive.
In other words, you’re looking at all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, eight cylinders, 4.4 liters, twin turbocharging, 523 horsepower, and 553 pound-feet of torque. From a visual standpoint, the X5 Protection VR6 differs from the bone-stock model starting with the auxiliary blue lights, 30-millimeter thickness of the windows, and 20-inch tires with reinforced sidewalls.
The special covering on the fuel tank can “heal” itself in case of a puncture, all while protecting the high-octane gasoline in the case of a fire. Aluminum plates for the underbody and luggage compartment can be spruced up with additional armor capable of withstanding a hand grenade. The armored roof, meanwhile, can handle the blast from 200 grams of C-4 plastic explosive.
Every window of the vehicle, including the windshield and rear glass, features splinter protection. Only four people can be seated in the X5 Protection VR6, who can communicate with the outside world through an intercom system. A hold-up alarm is also featured, and in case you were wondering, BMW quotes an acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.9 seconds.
That’s 1.6 seconds off the civilian version of the X5 M50i, which goes to show that the armored version is a lot heavier. Top speed is rated at 210 km/h (131 mph), more than enough given the size and weight of the mid-size sports activity vehicle from BMW. Model-specific suspension, sports brakes, Active Roll Stabilization, and Integral Active Steering are also included.
Elsewhere in the cabin, it’s business as usual for BMW thanks to four-zone automatic climate control, Automatic Soft Close for the doors, M leather steering wheel, and touchscreen infotainment. Customers can even opt for laser lights with Selective Beam technology.
Like the regular X5, the Protection VR6 is built at the BMW plant in Spartanburg for the entire world.
