After teasing the hell out of us and releasing specs piece by piece, BMW decided to bring their X5 eDrive Concept to New York and show it to us in all its glory, charging cable included.
The car was previously carried around to other auto shows around the world but this is the first time it reaches American soil, the place where it might actually sell really big.

Looking over the spec sheet you’ll find that this plug-in hybrid Sport Activity Vehicle might be perfect for people looking to be eco friendly on their way to work and not depend on a plug when they go cross country.

The powertrain is made up of an internal combustion 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine making 245 HP and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque, similar to the one found on the 328i model, and an electric motor taken from the i3, making 95 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. Put together, they should be good for 340 HP and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque but BMW didn’t say a thing in this regard so we’re guessing there is some power loss somewhere.

A new, adapted xDrive system takes the power from the two and sends it to the wheels, being capable of sending up to 100 percent of the power to one wheel alone and being fitted with the new coasting function that allows maximum fuel saving efficiency.

Underneath the luggage compartment you’ll find a lithium-ion battery that can power the car on electric mode for up to 20 miles (30 km) and take it up to a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) without releasing a single drop of CO2 into the atmosphere. According to BMW, this range should be enough for most people’s daily commutes.

At the moment, a clear release date for this car hasn’t been released but expect it to show up in 2015, judging by our latest batch of spyshots. Furthermore, the first hybrid SUV from BMW will also be joined by the first plug-in 3 Series later on, another car that we’re guessing will be using the exact same powertrain.
