BMW X5 eDrive Concept Goes for a Stroll in Paris

BMW is still keeping us on our toes, refusing to put the BMW X5 eDrive concept into production for now. They unveiled it a while back and even invited a couple of journalists out there to test it but the production version is still being kept away from us for some reason.

In the meantime, various publications around the world get the chance to experience what BMW still calls a Concept. You can spot it going around by the special camouflage that covers various parts of the body. Unlike the usual stuff the Germans use to cover up their rides, this one features blue and white instead of black and white.

Other than that there are some other things at play here as well. The front bumper was slightly modified to make the car a bit more aerodynamic while the wheels were adapted to have less rolling resistance to allow the car to eat up less fuel. That’s not all though.

Under the skin, there’s a new xDrive system

The X5 is basically one of the cars that helped create xDrive as we know it today starting with the E53 generation. Of course, before that, Bimmers also had all-wheel drive but those systems were extremely different.

It was only natural that the X5 was also the one that would introduce a new kind of four-wheel drive transmission. On the eDrive concept, the electric and conventional motors are working with the xDrive to make sure the most efficient way of traveling is used at all times. Furthermore, it’s close to the way the i8 works but on an SUV.

How about the specs?

The X5 eDrive will come out with a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged plant under the bonnet and an electric motor in the back, powered by batteries stowed under the luggage compartment.

Thanks to this combination, the car will have around 340 HP and 600 Nm of twist at its disposal to do with as it pleases. 245 HP will probably come from the turbocharged plant while 95 from the electric motor.

With them, the X5 will be good for an electric range of 20 miles (35 km) and it will also reach a top speed of 75 mph (120 km/h) in pure electric mode. Going all out from a standstill you’ll get to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 7 seconds.

The guys from BMW Motor Show Blog had the chance to take this thing around Paris for a short time. The photos they took are rather brilliant and talk of a possibly greener future. Check them out!
