BMW X4 M40i Spotted in Germany [Updated]

It’s pretty obvious that the development of the M40i X4 is inching forward, at least according to our latest spyshots. The car was just spotted in Alpine White at BMW’s Training Center in Unterschleissheim.

Whether it was there to train young cadets or just taking a break from testing, we don’t know but it seems like it dropped some of the camouflage we’ve been seeing lately.

Basically, the doors, bonnet and roof were completely camo-free but the most important elements we were looking for were still covered up. That includes the front bumper, the side sills, the wider fenders and the rear end.

Even so, we can tell that the changes won’t be all that big compared to the M Sport X4. Just like in the case of the other M performance automobiles, the M40i won’t be showing drastic upgrades on the visual front. They will happen underneath the skin.

The engine will be similar to the one used on the upcoming F87 M2 that was spotted testing just a couple of days back. It will be an upgraded N55 unit rumored to make around 370 HP and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque.

A new suspension and better brakes will complete the package as well as, hopefully, a quad tailpipe exhaust. With the new parts, the X4 could challenge its rival, the Porsche Macan Turbo and its 400 HP engine.

At the moment, the fastest X4 is the xDrive35d model that will do 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.2 seconds. Therefore, the M40i model is expected to drop beneath the 5 second mark in this department. Hopefully, just around the 4.8 region, the time Porsche claims for its Turbo model.

UPDATE: We took a better look and, despite what the photographer said initially, the car seems to be the upcoming BMW X6 M that we saw barely camouflaged last week. Judging by the headlights, rear doors and windows, this looks like the bigger Sport Activity Coupe, the true M car that is set to be launched at Paris this autumn alongside the new X5 M and not the M Performance X4.
