Posing. BMW’s X4 was basically made for this, so when we noticed the scenery above from inside this Sports Activity Coupe, we knew we had to pause our review and shoot the damn thing. The car? Of course it didn’t mind this!

Gone is the feeling of the xDrive we knew. Last time we checked, four-wheel driven BMWs used to show a satisfying rear axle bias when presented with a bend. Well, the X4, as well as the X3, show fine traces of understeer, which are instantly translated into a neutral handling. If you insist, the car goes into a slight all-wheel slide. For normal people, this means a safer way to attach corners at ridiculously high speeds and yet it does kill the fun.

The M Sport package fits the X4 like a glove. This BMW comes with styling exaggerations, used to aid the car with impersonating an attention magnet and the M Sport fascias add to this. As for the side view, the specific wheels and badges are the ones that catch the eye.

This is what differentiates the X4 from the X3 (the LCI / facelifted model, of course). Ironically, the X4’s rear cabin is more spacious than that of its mentor, the outgoing BMW X6. Still, this doesn’t convince us to accept the compromise and that’s because we don’t see the result shape as a beautiful one.

Unlike us and many others who will be put off by the X4’s... hunchy interpretation of the coupe notion, it is this exact detail that will make X4 buyers adore their cars. Come to think of it, this is the precise definition of a niche product.

Let’s not start a conversation about what happens when you take a BMW X model offroad, shall we? The X4 is, of course, no different so the best you can get out of it is to use this BMW for softroading situations. But BMW’s cars already come with generous ground clearance values, a great treat, so why not buy a 4-Series Gran Coupe instead? Well, that’s what we’d do, but we’ve already answered that above. For the rest of the car, you can check out the Full HD photo gallery of our BMW X4 review.
