BMW X2 Rendering Gets Almost Everything Right, Screws It Up with the Color

Much like its rival from Stuttgart, BMW is trying to fill every possible niche - and where there's nothing to fill, create one. What started with the BMW X6 has now spawned another, smaller model - the X4 - as well as two similar iterations from Mercedes-Benz - the GLC Coupe and GLE Coupe.
The X2 will follow the same idea behind its bigger Sports Activity Coupe brothers, but it will likely do without that exaggeratedly sloped rear window and go for a slightly more practical approach. However, since the X2 is based on the same UKL2 platform as the X1, it's hard to tell whether we will see a response from Mercedes-Benz in the foreseeable future.

Right now, the model that most would consider being X1's direct rival is the GLA, but the Mercedes-Benz is sensibly smaller and thus less practical. The real X1 correspondent in the Mercedes range is going to be the GLB, which will leave the GLA to battle it out with the MINI Countryman.

The X2, however, isn't your regular crossover. In Paris, BMW showed the world a concept previewing the production model, and we believe that the overall shape is exactly what the crossover BMW is going to sell will look like. Come to think of it, even the details don't look that much off.

The front end is the easiest part. RM CarDesign took the current X1, imported the X2 concept's grille and slightly more aggressive headlights and, presto, we have ourselves a winner. The rear, on the other hand, doesn't look quite as well sorted out. We agree that the X2's spoiler sadly won't make it into production, but there's something wrong with that diffuser - it almost looks like it's a work in progress on the artist's part. Apart from that and the C-pillar logo, it's reasonable to believe we're looking at the new BMW X2.

All the technical bits will be carried over from its X1 stablemate, meaning it'll have both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, and come equipped with a host of four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, all with turbocharging.

If there's one thing bad about this rendering, it has got to be the chosen color for the X2. That poopish-mustard-green would manage to make even a Pagani Huayra look modest, so the simple fact we can gaze at this BMW rendering without emptying our stomachs is a good sign.
