BMW X1 LEGO Replica Built by 800 Kids

{img1 lign=left}German manufacturer BMW announced today that 800 children, aged between 5 and 13 years old, assisted by the BMW staff, paid a visit to the BMW Welt last week and helped on building a full-scale X1 out of LEGO blocks. According to the carmaker, the task was completed in four days and there have been a total of 165,000 LEGO bricks used in the process.

As we said, the model was built to scale which means it is 4.5 metres long, 1.8m wide and 1.5m high. The project has been initiated by BMW to raise funds for socially disadvantaged children. For every built-up LEGO block the company will donate money to the Children's World "Die Arche" in Munich.

The BMW X1 is offered in six engine choices: xDrive28i, xDrive23d, xDrive20d, sDrive20d, xDrive18d and sDrive18d. The most powerful unit, fitted on the xDrive28i, is a six-cylinder, 258 hp gasoline unit. It sprints from naught to sixty in 6.8 seconds and tops at a speed of 205 km/h (127 mph - 230 km/h or 143 mph with optional high-speed set-up).

All drivetrains available on the X1 make full use of BMW's latest, including the already familiar EfficientDynamics: Brake Energy Regeneration, Auto Start Stop and a gearshift point indicator.

Standard safety features include three-point inertia-reel seat belts all round, frontal and side airbags as well as head airbags at the side, adaptive Brake Lights and daytime driving lights. Optionally, customers may choose Xenon headlights, Adaptive Headlights and a High-Beam Assistant.
