They recently discovered that on certain MY2006 3 Series Sedans and Wagons as well as 2007 Sedans, various 2006-2007 5 Series sedans/wagons and 2006 X5 models the front passenger seat occupant detection in case of an airbag emergency might malfunction.

"In consequence, in case the system fails, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury," says the NHTSA press release.

At the moment, the parts needed for fixing this issue are not available and BMW is set on procuring them. Therefore, starting with January 2014 a notification letter will be sent out, the repairs being scheduled to take place somewhere in March 2014.
