After the official tests, BMW will have to lower its stated fuel consumption level for the 2012 328i automatic. According to Car and Driver, a BMW spokesperson has confirmed this will have to be dropped from 24 city and 36 highway to 23/33 respectively.
So what happened for the new model to have to lower its mpg so much. Well, usually automakers run their cars through the EPA’s testing procedures and then they are published, but sometimes, the organization actually does the testing.
BMW carried out the tests in Munich using EPA-approved fuel on a US-spec 328i, but when the US organization tested the exact same car they got a different number. BMW will like want to redo the tests once it’s allowed to, but only for the 2013 model year.
As you’ll probably know by now, the 3.0-liter straight-six in the old 328i has been replaced with a 2.0-liter turbo in the new one. That’s not the only thing that’s changed, since the base price has been increased from $34,600 to $35,775.
