BMW Wants Young Women in Automotive Manufacturing

The BMW Group recently launched a new program that targets women 15-24 years old who may be interested in pursuing a career in a technical department, part of their automotive manufacturing process. At the moment, a pilot is being run in the UK but more countries are expected to be added to the list.

Young women are offered an apprenticeship program in hopes of attracting a whole new demographic to their ranks. In this effort, the UK government agreed to chip in to create more work places, as part of its own program called ’See Inside Manufacturing’.

According to the Birmingham Metropolitan College, the program called Girls Go Technical, is aiming at reducing the disproportionate ratio of men and women in the business. If it proves successful in this initial stage, more plants will adopt it in the future.

Since it’s being rolled out on the island, BMW’s MINI plants will, of course, be the ones where apprentices will get to work. The young women will be spending four days at the plants the group has in the UK, being trained.

Good grades will help out

The training will take place from Monday October 27th through to Friday, October 31st and a limited number of place are available. In order to apply, you need to fill in an application form that allows you to choose your preferred location between Hams Hall, Oxford and Swindon.

To be considered for a place you must have, or be predicted to achieve, 4 GCSE’s at grade A-C to include Maths, English and one science subject (predicted grades accepted). If you’re interested, you’ll find the application form attached in a pdf format, below. The deadline is September 26.
