The wait has been too long now, but we can finally show you the shape of BMW’s Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) ambitions, as the new racer based on the M3 coupe has been unveiled. The cover was pulled off at BMW Welt by the exhibition facility of the BMW AG in Munich, earlier by Dr. Klaus Draeger and Jens Marquardt. Andy Priaulx and Augusto Farfus were also announced to be among the lucky drivers for the 2012 season.

The impressive looking Concept Racer was revealed in true war paint - finished in carbon fiber and matt black paint. Flared wheel arches and a big wing on the back show in means business. However, this isn’t the final form of the DTM contender, as BMW’s motorsport engineers will work to improve on the design before it hits the track next year.

This is the first time that BMW will officially participate in the DTM series since it chose to go elsewhere for its fix of motorsport action back in 1994. It's hard for us to call it a contender for the series, but given the fact that the Germans scored an impressive 40 wins an 150 podium finishes between 1987 and 1992 with another M3, it’s also hard not to take notice.

"The entire team at BMW Motorsport is approaching this exciting project with absolute commitment. We began making technical preparations following our declaration of intent in April, and established parameters for a high-performance vehicle concept for deployment in the DTM. The positive decision of the BMW Board of Management means we can now shift up a gear and give the green light for development," commented BMW Motorsport Director, Mario Theissen.
