BMW-Toyota Sportscar Is Confirmed, Moves to Concept Phase

Rumors about Toyota collaborating with BMW over a new vehicle started about two years ago, but nobody could really tell what they were up to, leaving a lot of room for speculation. Now it looks like the two companies have confirmed their plans and indeed, we’ll get a German-Japanese developed sportscar sometime soon.

According to a report from Automotive News, the cooperation on the underpinnings of the car “has moved tot the concept phase and is running according to plan”. Finally, a word from the automakers that at least confirms they are working on something else than lithium-ion batteries.

You might have thought the automakers already have something to show us, but the vehicles have just passed the feasibility study part and they are now experimenting with different concepts. Which might be a bit late, considering that this phase was initially due to end in late 2013.

Still, both companies are tight-lipped about what kind of car we’ll get in a couple of years. Most people believe it will be the new Supra, previewed by the FT-1 concept Toyota showcased this year.

That might not be possible though, since another front-engined rear-wheel-drive coupe won’t fit in BMW’s current lineup. The only thing it might need is a new Z4, which doesn’t really resonate with the whole Supra-reincarnated idea. Looks like we'll have to wait a bit more to actually see what the two are really up to.
