The new BMW i3 all-electric city car will be released later this year. After showing up at the Geneva Motor Show along with it's bigger brother, the i8, BMW made it clear that the official release of the new electric vehicle is not too far away.
However, most interested parties expressed their concerns regarding the autonomy of the new car even before its official debut. According to BMW officials, the i3 will have a 20 mile range on batteries only, to which a "range-extender" (a 2-cylinder motorcycle engine) can be added for a total autonomy of 250 miles (400km).
That number seems to be too small for certain people and they are still not convinced to buy the marvel of engineering that this Bimmer will be. In order to address all these concerns, BMW decided to offer a an unexpected solution: conventional, internal-combustion-engined cars, loaned to the owner of an i3 who wants to go for a trip longer than 400 km. The cost of loaning conventional cars for long trips will be included in the i3's price tag. This is currently expected to sit at around €35,000 for the European market.
