The changes that the BMW Group is going through affect all models, with no exceptions. According to some new information from Germany, part of the upcoming BMW G30 5 Series production will be externalized to the Magna plant in Graz, Austria.
It seems like the withdrawal of the MINI Paceman from the production lines will free up some space that will be used for the 5 Series production. However, only 50,000 to 70,000 units per year will be built in the neighboring country next to Germany. Some more will be assembled at the Shenyang plant in China for the local market alone, all of them long wheelbase models.

All cars will be using the new CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform that will be underpinning all future rear-wheel drive cars from BMW in the future, from the 3 Series up. Its usage will allow the Germans to cut production costs due to the high volume of shared components.

In terms of engines, the new 5 Series will be using 2-liter 4-cylinder plants as well as 6-cylinder and 8-cylinder alternatives for the higher-spec models. Most of them will be shared with the rest of the line-up.

The biggest improvements will be the M550d xDrive models that are likely to get an upgraded version of the N57S engine with four turbochargers and an output of 400 HP. The torque figure should go up to around 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque out of a block that should stay the same in size.

Plug-in hybrids will surely be on the table, probably using a powertrain similar to the one found on the X5 xDrive40e model these days. That means it will use a 2-liter petrol engine up front coupled to an electric motor included in the gearbox casing for an electric range of up to 32 km (20 miles).

It's all pretty far-fetched at the moment though, as the new 5 Series is scheduled to make its debut close to the end of next year. Until then we'll probably get more reliable info via our sources inside the Munich HQ.
