BMW to Debut Revised KERS in Turkey

BMW Sauber have confirmed that they'll use a revised Kinetic Energy Recovery System during the Turkish Grand Prix. BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen said the improved version of KERS will be fitted on both F1.09s at Istanbul, and will complete the European package for the Hinwil based team.

BMW Sauber did not use KERS in Spain as the team debuted several aerodynamic features for the Barcelona race. Although the newly-improved unit was ready for implementation from as early as last weekend, the team decided to focus entirely on the aero updates and renounced KERS for the first time this season.

The team will not use the technology in Monaco either – as all teams are expected to do the same – because of the low-speed corners and lack of long straights in Monte Carlo. In Istanbul, however, Theissen is confident the new package will prove much more competitive than in the non-European rounds this season.

We have developed the aero package and in parallel we are developing a new KERS package which fits the new aero package. These were on the same schedule but we have decided not to combine it because it was clear to us that the new aero package alone would eat up all the time we have on Friday and Saturday morning to get it sorted, or almost sorted,” said Theissen.

And if we then had a new KERS at the same time, it would have been too much. We are planning to have it in Istanbul,” added the German official.

BMW, McLaren and Ferrari have remained the only teams to continue the development of the aforementioned technology, as Renault have already confirmed they've scrapped KERS from their 2009 development programme until September.
