Ever since the 2014 DTM season was over, we’ve been kind-of missing the action from the German Touring Car championship. Admittedly, we had Formula 1 to keep our motorsport desires in check but now that that’s over too, we need something new.
In the US, the various competitions that involved the Z4 GT3 are also over, leaving another gaping hole in our need to absorb some action every weekend. However, it’s time to look at the future now and, since BMW wants another title next year, the Motorsport teams are now heading for their first training session since October 19, when the game was over.
Yes, this year the blue and white roundel manufacturer claimed the Champion title thanks to Marco Wittmann and his team. They were also the ones that held the cup handed over to the best team of the season, that was well deserved by the guys from BMW Team RMG.
However, things could’ve gone better. To be completely honest, apart from Marco’s consistent performances that brought him the title with two races to go, no other BMW driver showed incredible performances.
The second best placed racer was Martin Tomczyk in sixth place, followed by rookie Maxime Martin that came over from the US to race in the DTM. Going further down the line, we’ll find the 2012 champion, Bruno Spengler, on the 11th position and that’s not the place where a champ should finish, is it?
Apart from Marco Wittmann, Augusto Farfus, Maxime Martin, Bruno Spengler, Timo Glock and Antonio Felix da Costa, several new drivers were offered a chance to prove themselves in Spain.
They include Tom Blomqvist, Jack Harvey, Richie Stanaway, Alex Lynn and Sam Bird. BMW works driver Lucas Luhr and Robin Frijns will also drive the BMW M4 DTM for the first time. Blomqvist is the Stig’s son. Well, not the Stig you’re thinking of but Stig Blomqvist, a Swedish World Rally Champion. He also raced in Formula 3 and showed great perspective.
That being said, it’s pretty obvious that the new blood is really young, Blomqvist, Harvery and Stanaway being just 21 so BMW is now looking for a long term commitment. Hopefully, their enthusiasm will be matched by their results on the track.
