Even though Marco Wittmann already won the Drivers’ title in the DTM BMW didn’t turn down its engines and kept on pushing claiming two spots on the podium in yesterday’s race. Wittmann and Tomczyk claimed the second and third spot on the podium after 43 laps. Maxime Martin crossed the finish line sixth, winning the title of ‘Rookie of the Year’ in the DTM, just like Marco did last year.
The result was more than satisfying as BMW Team RMG managed to secure the title in the Teams’ competition and the German company is closer to the win in the Manufacturers competition as well.
At the moment, BMW has 361 points to its name, being 21 points ahead of Audi and 153 ahead of Mercedes-Benz that doesn’t stand a chance anymore. The last race will decide the winner in this category as well, with Audi still being involved in the fight for the number one spot.
“After the race at the Lausitzring, today was another of this season’s highlights. We are all overjoyed. This is the reward for all the hard work of the last few weeks, months and years. We also showed that we can land both cars near the front of the field,” said Stefan Reinhold, BMW Team RMG Principal.
“Marco Wittmann has obviously been outstanding this year. However, Maxime Martin has also performed very strongly as a rookie in 2014, and not only at his win in Moscow. He fought back very well today and also scored a superb result. We will now continue to push hard to ensure that BMW still leads the Manufacturers’ Championship after the finale in Hockenheim,” he added.
The race wasn’t an easy one either, with four safety car periods over the course of the 43 laps. Unfortunately, those prolonged periods when the safety car led the pack meant no other BMW drivers finished in the points apart from the podium finishers and Martin.
Bruno Spengler crossed the finish line eight but he was penalized for a collision shortly before the end of the race and classified 17th. Joey Hand came in 11th, Timo Glock 13th, Antonio Felix da Costa 14th while Augusto Farfus had to retire after just 18 laps after being sent flying into the barriers by a rival car.
“I was hit from behind by Daniel Juncadella. It was a really big impact, and I think he got his braking completely wrong. The incident was a shame and brought my race to an early end. I was lucky: when I saw the wall coming towards me I thought I was going to hit it head on. Fortunately, however, I hit it side on,” said Augusto about the incident.
The last race of the season will take place on the Hockenheim, on October 19. Having already won two titles, BMW will only be fighting to keep its lead in the Manufacturers’ Championship.
