The i3 was first shown as a concept two years ago at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, the first mass-market electric BMW is coming full circle and will debut in production form at the 2013 edition of the same venue.

BMW gave the car more power than its rivals. With an electric motor that produces 170 HP and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque, the i3 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and hits a top speed of 150 km/h (limited).

From its extensive trials, BMW has leaned that on average, people only drive 64 km per day, so they gave the i3 a real world range estimated at 130 to 160 kilometers, equivalent to 81 to 99 miles. The benefit is that the car is not ladened with a heavy burden and is thus more efficient. If driving range is a concern, than a range-extending two-cylinder petrol engine is available on the i3 REX model and offers a combined maximum range of approximately 300 km (180 miles).
