BMW Showcases Highly Automated Driving at 2014 CES

In recent years, people got used to having the best possible safety systems at their side all the time, especially inside a BMW. That’s because the engineers from Bavaria were instructed to make the cars safer than ever, to always keep on top of the competition.

At the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show that is currently underway in Las Vegas, BMW showcased their latest research and results in the field, under the ConnectedDrive banner. Using a 2 Series and a 6 Series Gran Coupe they proved to the world that what they call “highly automated driving at the limit” is actually working.

What does that whole sentence mean? The BMW Group created a system of electronics that uses advanced control technology to keep you safe up even to the car’s dynamic limit. For example, the system can even actively intervene to chance the direction in which the car is moving to avoid an obstacle that suddenly comes up in front of you, actually swerving around it (using the electronically controlled steering, brakes and accelerator).

The whole concept was introduced under the ActiveAssist moniker and is described by BMW as “a safety assistance system which brings the vehicle back into line in demanding driving situations without any input from the driver.”

Using ActiveAssist, the team proved that the cars fitted with it can even perform a precision slalom between cones, adhere to a marked out circular course regardless of the friction coefficient of the road surface, and execute an obstacle-evading lane change to perfection.

The system can even help you drift if you want to, helping you keep control of the car, following a safe path, as long as there are no cars around, of course.
