BMW Ships 10,000 3 Series to China

The immense success experienced by German manufacturer BMW in China is causing production-related problems in the country. The 2011 BMW 3 Series for instance is so successful that it took BMW's local partner, Brilliance, by surprise, causing it to phone Germany and ask for extra vehicles to be shipped their way. And we're not talking about ten units or anything...

According to BMW official Harald Krueger, the German carmaker will send 10,000 3 Series into China, despite the fact that it will have to pay the 25 percent import taxes the Chinese are imposing.

The new 3 Series, launched in the beginning of the year, brings both visual and performance upgrades, with the most notable ones being the introduction of the BMW 318i powered by a straight-four 2.0l 143 hp petrol engine and the entry of the most efficient car in the mid-range segment, as BMW calls it, the 320d EfficientDynamics Edition.

In all, the new BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible come with five petrol and four diesel engines. For both Coupe and Convertible versions, the choice of engines is made up of four- and six-cylinders units, while the diesel engines comprises of one four-cylinder and two six-cylinders engines.

As a result of the sales growth worldwide, fueled especially by China, BMW announced today it is revising its sales target to 1.4 million units. For the first half of the year, BMW sold 696,026 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles, with China leading the way.

Industry experts cited by just-auto.com warn however than betting all on China might backfire, should the local market not be able to absorb the invasion of foreign vehicles. German carmakers are the most exposed to such an outcome.
