Technology is advancing at an alarming pace these days. Things that seemed impossible not even a decade ago are now simple daily amenities. Car manufacturers know this too well and are adapting correspondingly.
BMW was and will always be at the forefront of technological advancement. Even if the technology they need might not be used traditionally in cars, they will find a way o using it.

One clear example of this is the i8. The revolutionary sports car will have a set of new features that are not only ahead of its time but they also come from other fields of innovation.

The i8 will be the world's first volume-produced vehicle to be equipped with chemically hardened glass or Gorilla Glass as it's called in the smartphone world. It will be used to separate the passenger compartment and boot of the i8 and is comprised of two layers, each 0.7 millimeters thick with acoustic sheeting between.

This way, in addition to excellent acoustic properties, a further advantage of this solution is weight savings of around 50 per cent compared with conventional laminated glass.

As we all know, in developing this hybrid car weight was a central point. This kind of solutions shouldn't surprise us but rather the lack of such things should be viewed as peculiar.

The i8 will be unveiled at Frankfurt later this year and will go on sale next to its smaller brother, the i3, next year.
