We already know almost everything about the future all-electric car from BMW, the i3. However, the price tag of the new car is still unknown and everyone is just speculating at the moment. In an interview for Automotive News, BMW North America's CEO, Ludwig Wilisch shed some light into the subject.
According to him, the new car will cost just as much as a pretty well equipped F30 3 Series, ranging around $40,000 (€30,000). Furthermore, the car might even be eligible for the $7,500 (€5,700) federal tax credit, even though officials didn't complete their talks with the federal government yet.
As for the range extender version, fitted with the 2-cylinder motorcycle engine that constantly charges the batteries, pricing is still to be announced, somewhere closer to the launch date.
BMW NA's CEO also said that the propeller badged brand doesn't expect the i3 to be a volume car, since the EV market is still small and, for example, only 57,000 electric vehicles were sold in the US in 2012.
Talking about the range of the i3, Willisch expects most of the cars to be sold with the range-extender feature. However, if you decide to go all-electric, BMW will also provide an conventional, internal combustion engined car for you, in case you want to go for longer trips.
